See the sticky on this page for recent changes to the Ancients Format.

For those of you who don't want to view the entire thing, I added the following text beneath "line items" under the banned clause:

EXCEPTION: The above line items are void in regard to actual “Medusan Lord” and “Destiny Lord” challenges FOR THE RUNNER OF SAID “LORDS.” Challengers of said “Lords” must adhere to the above line items. Runners of said “Lords” are not required to do so.


I also added "Shadan Adler" to the list of banned cards.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!! But I loved Shadan!!! :(

So did many. Funny enough, his banning has nothing to do with his overt power level, but rather a stupidly easy infinite combo. 8-)

Of course, now I won't have to listen to people complain about his overt power level...an added bonus. ;-)

I assume it has something to do with his Spend Order, but I'll let someone more knowledgeable than I give the specifics.

I think most people (me included) miss the errata where Shadan "Cannot start in play" rather than "Enters play spent".

Yes. That part is rather central to the combo. I saw "Enters play spent" and went, meh. Without that restriction, I understand the play and pick up recycle. I just missed the erratum.

Why, exactly, was that erratum issued again?

Because you could start 3 shadan aldar's the first stage of your turn is to ready the in play characters, thus bypassing the enters play spent text.

After looking much more closely at the level 3's I can see why the card is over the top in many ways. I think both the Enters Play Spent and May Not Start in Play restrictions are good in general for the card, however I can now see how much more abusive this might be, especially given that Toren and Archer Tower were considered too much for the format. Beheading is good (not great) meta but obviously the infinite is far more problematic.

I...do that thing where I find some common state of philosophical existence with a certain unnamed party.

There are still several inifinite combos in this game, which are just as easy as the Motivator combo. Just keep looking and you'll see them as well, I'm sure if I can find out something others have or will in the future.

If your deck is "well rounded" enough, as it should be for Ancients, these combos are easy to shut down anyway...
